My Journey of Uplifting the D.C. Community and Challenging Mental Health Stigma

SOME Clinician Coordinator for Integration, Michael Browne, was kind enough to share what motivates him at SOME, and why he is passionate about the work that he does. We’re extremely lucky to have staff like Michael, who have a tireless commitment to the work that we do and our whole person care model.

“I am deeply passionate about the D.C. community because it is the place I call home. I feel a strong responsibility to use my talents and energy to help my neighbors and fellow residents. Like many cities, ours faces significant challenges, including poverty, substance use, and a mental health crisis. Having witnessed similar struggles growing up in western Pennsylvania, I was driven to support others in crisis and advocate for a society that meets everyone’s needs. No one should have to live on the streets, go hungry, or face their struggles alone. These are basic assumptions that should guide our community, and we must do everything we can to uplift each other.

One issue I feel particularly strongly about is the stigma surrounding mental health. This stigma permeates many aspects of our society, leaving individuals ashamed of their circumstances and often preventing them from seeking help. It also desensitizes us as a community, making us fearful or indifferent to those in dire need of our collective support. This stigma has made it easier to defund social programs and avoid fully committing to addressing the crisis of mental distress. I believe that until we challenge this stigma head-on, we won’t make the meaningful changes our society needs.

I am fortunate that we have organizations like SOME, which not only provide vital services to our neighbors but also stand up and give them a voice in the District of Columbia.”
