SOME’s Reclaiming our Communities Cookout

The Family Services Summer Cookout, held in September at Fort Dupont Park, was a joyful celebration and the perfect way to mark the end of summer. Families, staff, and community members gathered for a day of fun and connection, with a DJ setting the tone and tables brimming with food. Kids had a blast with face painting and games, while cooling stations with fans and cold water helped everyone beat the heat and enjoy the day.

One of the highlights of the cookout was the wide variety of activities and resources available to attendees. SOME’s Center for Employment Training (CET), the D.C. Department of Insurance, Securities, and Banking (DISB), and several other local organizations were on-site to provide valuable information about financial literacy, housing counseling, and neighborhood safety. The event was not only about enjoying the final days of summer but also about offering support and resources to families in the community.

The cookout exemplified the spirit of unity and support that defines SOME’s Family Services. The event brought families together to relax, connect, and access vital community resources. From fun activities for kids to essential services for adults, the cookout was a tremendous success, closing out the summer on a high note and reinforcing the power of community.
