For many of us, a trip to the beach may feel familiar. But for some of the 58 seniors taking part in SOME’s Senior Services summer trip to Ocean City, it will be a brand-new experience. Several participants shared that they have never touched the beach or felt sand beneath their feet. This summer, they will have the opportunity to do both while spending time together, enjoying new experiences, and creating memories along the way.
The trip is sponsored by The Washington Home and is part of SOME’s commitment to creating opportunities for older adults to stay active, connected, and engaged. Before heading to Ocean City, participants gathered for a full orientation designed to make sure everyone felt prepared and comfortable ahead of the trip.
The orientation brought seniors together with SOME staff and community partners for introductions, important trip information, and plenty of time to ask questions. Participants reviewed their travel packets and heard presentations from SOME clinic staff and partners including The Washington Home, Goods for Good, and AARP. The day also included lunch, a clothing table, and testimonials from seniors who had participated in previous summer trips.
Hearing from past participants offered this year’s group a chance to learn what to expect from people who had already experienced the trip themselves. Just as importantly, the orientation gave everyone an opportunity to connect before traveling together. The excitement in the room was a reminder that experiences like these can offer something simple but meaningful: a chance to get out, spend time with friends, try something new, and enjoy the summer.
For SOME’s Senior Services participants, the Ocean City trip is another opportunity to build community and enjoy experiences that may not otherwise be accessible. For some, it will mean returning to a favorite place. For others, it will mean seeing the ocean up close for the first time. We cannot wait to see the memories our seniors make this summer.
