Building Health & Confidence: SOME Launches Community Care Partnership with Against the Grain Barbershop

This past weekend, SOME was proud to partner with Against the Grain Barbershop to launch a new ongoing community care program that blends wellness with personal care.

For decades, barbershops have been more than places to get a haircut—they’ve been gathering spaces, trusted institutions, and safe havens where conversation flows freely. Now, with this partnership, clients at Against the Grain will not only walk out looking sharp, but they’ll also have access to critical health screenings that can make a lasting impact on their lives.

A Fresh Cut, A Health Check

As part of this program, barbers will incorporate blood pressure checks, screenings for acanthosis (a potential early sign of diabetes), and other health assessments into their everyday services. These touchpoints create new opportunities to catch health concerns early, connect individuals with SOME’s medical resources, and empower residents to take charge of their well-being.

“Sometimes the best place to start a conversation about health isn’t a clinic—it’s right where people already feel comfortable,” said SOME Employee Keisha Barnes, “This partnership bridges that gap in a natural and meaningful way.”

Building Long-Term Wellness Together

This collaboration reflects SOME’s commitment to Whole Person Care—addressing not just immediate needs like food and shelter, but also the long-term health and stability of individuals and families. By meeting community members where they are, we reduce barriers to care and open new pathways to wellness.

We’re excited to continue building this relationship with Against the Grain and look forward to the impact it will have on health outcomes across the District. Together, we are not just cutting hair—we’re cutting down barriers to care and shaping a healthier future. 💚
