Nourishing Our Community Through Holiday Cooking

Last week, more than 15 residents at Roberts Residence joined Food Jonezi for a heart-healthy cooking demonstration focused on turning Thanksgiving leftovers into nourishing meals. Participants learned how to prepare a flavorful White Bean Chicken Chili using no added sugar and no sodium, relying instead on fresh herbs and spices like cilantro, cumin, and coriander to build rich, satisfying flavor. The session offered practical tools for stretching holiday ingredients into soups and broths while supporting cardiovascular wellness — and created a warm, engaging space for residents to cook, taste, and learn together.

This hands-on experience is one piece of a much larger effort made possible through the generosity of the AstraZeneca Foundation, whose support is helping SOME expand access to health education and specialized care across our community.

In Washington, D.C., access to consistent healthcare is too often tied to stable housing and financial security — resources many of our neighbors lack. Through their partnership, the AstraZeneca Foundation has become a critical ally in helping SOME close this gap. One of the most transformative outcomes has been the launch of SOME’s cardiac care program, led by cardiology nurse practitioner Angela Silverman, which brings cardiac screenings, treatment, and education to patients who previously had limited or no access to specialty care.

Hypertension and medication-literacy materials are now widely shared across our Federally Qualified Health Center, and new initiatives — including a cardiovascular health workshop tailored for individuals in substance-use recovery — are underway. The Foundation’s investment also supports community events that make healthy living approachable, fun, and culturally relevant, such as recent nutrition demonstrations at Roberts Residence led by Food Jonezi and nutritionist Charmaine Jones.

At our Break the Cycle Gala in October, SOME honored the AstraZeneca Foundation with our Corporate Champion Award in recognition of their leadership in advancing health equity. Now in their third year of partnership, their support fuels expanded services across our health center, dining room clinic, and affordable housing programs.

SOME is proud to stand alongside the AstraZeneca Foundation. Their commitment to reducing healthcare disparities is helping more residents access the knowledge, resources, and care they need to build healthier, more stable futures.
