Dining Room

Individuals and groups are needed to help prepare meals and serve them to hungry guests at SOME’s Dining Rooms for the Homeless located at 71 O Street, NW. With the help of volunteers, SOME provides a nourishing, hot breakfast and lunch every day of the year.

Volunteers can reserve or sign up for shifts only up to one month in advance, with few exceptions. All volunteers must schedule a time to help in advance and review our volunteer dress code. Volunteers must be age 13 or older (please read our youth volunteer policy).

Groups volunteering in the Dining Rooms are limited to 15 volunteers per meal on weekdays and 10 volunteers per meal on weekends to ensure that each person is well utilized. Group leaders may reserve slots for a limited time. All group members must have their own Volunteer Hub account to claim those spots before the group reservation expires.

Photo Policy

No one may take photos (even of themselves or their group) in the Dining Room during the hours the meal is served to guests, or while any guests are in the dining room. Having phones during a shift is highly discouraged for this reason. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator if you have questions.

Provide-A-Meal (PAM) Volunteers

Provide-A-Meal volunteer groups provide meals on a regular basis in SOME’s Dining Rooms. This is a wonderful volunteer program for groups from faith communities, businesses and civic organizations to feed the hungry.

There are several different ways to provide a meal:

  • Bring in pre-made casseroles (40 to 60 casseroles in 9×12 aluminum pans will provide lunch for 400-500 people)
  • Bring ingredients and cook a full meal in SOME’s kitchen
  • Purchase food through one of SOME’s wholesalers, which SOME staff and volunteers can prepare. Approximate cost for a meal is $700-$800.

PAM volunteers are not required to stay and serve the meal they provide, but they are more than welcome to do so. We help with menu suggestions, food quantities and a list of wholesale food distributors. There is also the option to share a day with another group or to provide part of a meal.

If your group would like to provide a meal, or if you have any questions, please contact SOME’s Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected] or call 202.797.8806, ext. 2201. We are in need of Provide-A-Meal volunteers on the following days.
