Recent Happenings at SOME
April 27, 2017
SOME runs 38 programs and there is always a lot going on! Here are some recent events in our programs from April.
WKYS 93.9 Visits SOME
On Friday April 14th, SOME was able to host a pizza party for the guests in our Dining Room courtesy of the Carter-Epps Family and Little Caesar’s Pizza! This event was accompanied by a live broadcast featuring DJ EZ Street from 93-WKYS radio station. During the live five hour broadcast from the SOME parking lot, the station played music, interviewed several SOME staff members about their departments and informed the public on how they can volunteer and provide support. We are so grateful to Russ Carter and his family, DJ EZ Street, DJ Flava, 93-WKYS and Little Caesar’s Pizza for their support.
Teen Spirit Week
SOME’s Teen Spirit Week took place April 17-21, 2017. Every evening a different event was put on by our Family Services Department for teens living in SOME’s Affordable Housing. The focus of this year’s Teen Spirit week was “Making Healthy Choices.” Speakers from the community came in and talked with participants about healthy decision-making, and the teens enjoyed food, games, a DJ and workshops throughout the week. To celebrate the end of the week the teens came to our Dining Room to volunteer for lunch. The teens were actively involved in each session and are looking forward to incorporating what they learned into their lives!
As part of our neighborhood celebration of Earth Day, volunteers came to SOME to weed, rake, plant flowers, lay mulch and clean up outside SOME’s facilities on O Street. It was a beautiful morning and we want to thank all of the volunteers that came out to help us beautify our properties. We were glad to partner with ANC 5E, 52 O Street Studios, Lebanon Senior Apartments and our residential neighbors to celebrate Earth Day with a neighborhood block party!
Professional Development Seminar
SOME’s Professional Development Day was a great success! Guests learned about professional behavior in the workplace, 30 second elevator pitches and how to dress appropriately for the job. They then had the chance to shop and pick out professional clothing to take home with them. Thank you to SOME Staff; Russell Carter, Senate Realty; Cheryl Sloan, Margaret Dorsey Jones, Carrie Coleman and John Wesley, AME Zion Church; Stephanie Hudson, Avon Consultant; Michelle Trotter, Mary Kay Consultant and to all the generous individuals and companies who donated the clothing!
