Recent Happenings at SOME
June 27, 2017
SOME runs 38 programs and there is always a lot going on! Here are some recent events in our programs from May.
We had a fabulous time at the opening art exhibit of at our affordable housing program. The exhibition displayed artwork that had been created in Art Attack, on ongoing program where residents of our affordable housing to learn and experience the use of art as a medium to express their creativity and emotions. Art Attack leads the residents in a variety of art projects that can highlight each of the twelve step model of recovery. Using the 12-Step model participants create artworks that reflect inner feelings and life milestones. The group meets once a month and has steadily grown to include eleven residents. The art projects leave each resident with unique creative outcomes that will hopefully motivate, inspire, and be a springboard to further awareness. We hope to extend this program to more residents of other affordable housing units in the coming year.
Recently SOME’s clothing room has undergone a renovation! New vinyl flooring was put in, a fresh coat of paint applied and the entire room was reorganized for a more open design. We wanted our guests to have even more room to browse and select the donated items they need. Our clothing room provides clothing, undergarments, shoes and inclement weather items to homeless individuals in DC. Make a donation.
On May 11th, 2017 SOME held a graduation for 20 men and women who had completed our Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Program. This evening was a joyful night for family, friends and staff to gather around the graduates and celebrate the end of our in-patient treatment program. Graduates shared stories of their past and their experience in the program. We were pleased to honor 17 women who successfully completed treatment at SOME’s Thea Bowman House, a residential treatment program for women with children.
This graduation ceremony also marks the graduate’s admittance into the SOME Alumni Association. Our Alumni Association was started in 1991 as a support group for clients who had completed our Addiction Program. Members meet regularly and give back to SOME; leading group sessions and speaking with potential clients about their experience.
In just 24 hours we raised $80,000 to Send SOME Kids to Camp! Thank you so much to all who donated, spread the message or forwarded emails and to our three matching gift donors, including the Gannett Foundation. With the support of friends like you, SOME was also able to win two Do More 24 prizes. This incredible generosity will provide 100 formerly homeless kids with the opportunity to go to camp this summer! The children living in SOME’s affordable housing will have unforgettable summer camp experiences where they will explore their passions, learn new skills, gain confidence and create lifelong friendships. The children we serve and their families join me in thanking you for making dreams their come true!
