Back(Pack) to School for Students in SOME Housing

Over The Weekend..

Over the weekend, school-aged children and their parents living in SOME's affordable housing attended our annual Back-to-School cookout. The cookout is a fun afternoon filled with great food, fun activities, like face-painting and tug-of-war, raffles, and more. Most importantly, each child goes home with a brand-new backpack filled with all of the supplies they need to be succesful this fall. Families are also able to sign up for school uniform assistance.

At the end of August, 370 children and teens living in SOME's housing will head back to school. For many of their families, purchasing everything they need for school can be a hardship. We are so grateful to the almost 50 individuals and groups who donated backpacks this year and to the many people who generously gave to our school uniform drive. We would also like to thank Millennium Sports Riders motorcycle club, and Reading is Fundamental, sponsored by State Farm, which provided books for residents.

But There's More..

Along with enjoying new backpacks and school supplies residents also enjoyed a lot of good food! Hot dogs and hamburgers were coming out all afternoon to make sure all of our SOME families left full.

The event was wonderfully successful,  At least 157 bookbags filled with school supplies were given out to children with the rest being picked up by families at their buildings.
