Education & Employment Resource Fair

SOME’s Family Services held its 4th annual Education & Employment Resource Fair on Saturday, January 9 at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library.

“The goal of our resource fair is to expose families to opportunities that could elevate and renew their quality of life by providing them with the opportunity to hear about the success of others and to connect with prospective schools and community organizations,” states Dionna Day, Family Services Education Coordinator.

Families from SOME’s affordable housing programs came to learn about the multitude of educational opportunities for their kids, including representatives from KIPP DC, Ingenuity Prep, DC Prep, Monument Academy and Early Stages, to name a few.

For adult residents looking to continue their education and learn about local job training programs, representatives from UDC, DC DOES, Byte Back, SOME CET, YWCA and Jubilee Jobs were there to provide information on enrollment and training opportunities.

New this year, SOME Center for Employment Training (CET) Career Services Manager, Paul Negron, held a lively discussion on customizing your job search in today’s job market. A few of Paul’s top tips included:

  • Highlight skills, strengths and accomplishments
  • Your cover letter is your biggest weapon!

The day wrapped up with an inspirational panel discussion made up of residents from SOME’s Independence Place, Chesapeake House and Barnaby Place. Residents shared their career and continuing education journeys with fair attendees. Helpful advice from two residents included: continue to enhance the skills you ALREADY have and VOLUNTEER!
