Tutoring Adults

Center for Employment Training (CET)
SOME Center for Employment Training (2815 "O" Street, SE) helps empower adults to move out of poverty and into living wage careers through job training, human development, basic skills training and job development. Volunteers are needed to tutor adults in basic math and English, assist with resume development, or assist the instructor with computer tutoring and paperwork in the classroom.

Career Development Assistant
Volunteers are needed to work one-on-one with trainees applying for jobs in SOME CET's career development center. Career Development Assistants help trainees develop resumes and cover letters that accurately reflect their skills and abilities, complete job applications on paper and online, and perform online job searches. Career Development Assistants also provide motivation and encouragement to trainees. Orientation and training are provided.

Basic Education Tutor
Volunteers are needed to work one-on-one with adult trainees on Basic Education skills. Tutoring sessions focus on basic Math and English with an emphasis on job-readiness and highly personalized curriculum. A weekly commitment of at least one hour is strongly preferred. Orientation and training are provided.

GED and General Tutoring
Several of SOME's housing programs are looking for adult volunteers to work one-one with residents pursuing educational advancement. Evening and weekend opportunities available.

Computer Training
Several of SOME's programs are looking for volunteers to help tutor in basic computer usage and internet skills. Prefer individuals or small groups who could volunteer at least once a month.

Mentoring Adults
Volunteers needed to assist in day-to-day operations of SOME's mental health crisis stabilization program. Great opportunity for someone with an interest in working with adults living with mental illness. Volunteers are needed to assist in activities, meal preparation, outings, supporting residents. Mental health/counseling experience beneficial but not required. Volunteers should be calm, sensitive, flexible, willing to work as part of team. Skills in art, music, gardening, etc. appreciated.

Tutoring and Mentoring Children

In partnership with Project Northstar, SOME offers a tutoring/mentoring program for the school-aged children who participate in our Thea Bowman Housing Program. The program's primary focus is to teach basic academic skills to at-risk children with a secondary emphasis on cultural and recreational activities. During the tutoring sessions (located at 71 "O" Street, NW), volunteers will get to know their students, help students complete their homework, eat dinner with students, and help clean up. Volunteers are asked to commit two hours per week for one year, and to participate in an orientation where basic tutoring techniques and other topics will be covered.

SOME Place for Kids, 2800 N Street, SE
In order to provide a fun learning environment, SOME is currently seeking energetic adults (mature high school juniors and seniors will be considered for the youth program) to share their time and talents with our youth. We are also seeking volunteers with special skills and abilities, such as academics, computer training and assistance, dance, aerobics, yoga, poetry and spoken word, art, physical fitness, cooking, and story telling.

Special Event - Volunteers are needed to present at the SOME Place for Kids "Career Spotlight" on September 26. Presenters will speak with children and teens about their careers.
