What to do if you are asked for money

Deciding what to do if a homeless person asks you for money is a personal choice, and there is no correct answer. However, here are some practical suggestions for occasions when you are approached. First, acknowledge the person. A polite "no" or "not today" is often better received than simply ignoring him or her. Remember that it is okay to say "no." Whatever you do, we encourage you to leave your judgments aside. If you are uncomfortable with giving money, suggest SOME as a location to obtain free meals, showers, clothing, and medical care. You can also print out informational tickets to hand out to homeless people. Our Main Dining Room at 71 'O' Street, NW is open every day, and our staff is available to direct clients toward our other services.
