Welcome to SOME (So Others Might Eat), an interfaith, community-based organization that exists to help the poor and homeless of our nation's capital. We meet the immediate daily needs of the people we serve with food, clothing, and health care. We help break the cycle of homelessness by offering services, such as affordable housing, job training, addiction treatment, and counseling, to the poor, the elderly and individuals with mental illness. Each day, SOME is restoring hope and dignity one person at a time. We invite you to join us.

Housing 12 formerly homeless families

receives support from the
Local Rent Supplement Program.

SOME provides safe, affordable housing with support services to 59 homeless and poor families with more than 100 children, and to over 300 homeless and low-income single adults in Washington, DC. We are currently developing 240 additional units to address the critical lack of affordable housing for homeless families, single adults, and low-income seniors.

Funding from the Local Rent Supplement Program is essential for the completion of these projects, and for our continued progress towards our goal of creating 1,000 new units of affordable housing for poor and homeless children, women and men.

However, the Mayor's proposed Fiscal Year 2009 budget provides no increase for this program, which puts our projects and many others at risk. So, if you live in DC, please e-mail the City Council to ask them to make a $15 million increase for the Local Rent Supplement Program a top priority. Please also ask friends and family who live in the District to let City Council know how important the Local Rent Supplement Program is to the poor and homeless in our community. Thank you.

To learn more about the need for additional Rent Supplement funding, please read "Help for Low-Income Residents Sought" (The Washington Post, April 24, 2008).

Acting HUD Secretary Roy Bernardi Celebrates National Volunteer Week at SOME

Acting HUD Secretary Roy Bernardi marked National Volunteer Week by serving lunch in SOME's Dining Room for the Homeless on Thursday, May 1. "The services provided by SOME and other organizations like it are critical to restoring hope and dignity to those less fortunate and breaking the cycle of homelessness," said Mr. Bernardi, who also served in the Dining Room in 2007.

With the help of thousands of volunteers and more than 100 Provide-A-Meal groups, SOME served nearly 250,000 meals to the hungry and homeless in 2007. Learn more about how your company, faith community, or civic organization can provide hundreds of meals for hungry children, women and men each month.

SOME Senior Summer Camp

For 27 years, SOME has been taking low-income seniors from the inner-city to a serene vacation spot on the Opequon Creek for a week of recreation, arts and crafts, and group activities. SOME's Senior Summer Camp provides much needed rest, relaxation and companionship to elderly District residents who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford a vacation.
