Dining Room
Volunteers

Individuals and groups are needed to help prepare meals and serve them to hungry guests at SOME’s Dining Rooms for the Homeless located at 71 O Street, NW. With the help of volunteers, SOME provides a nourishing, hot breakfast and lunch every day of the year.

Sign Up to Volunteer

The Dining Rooms are limited to 15 volunteers per meal to ensure that each person is well utilized. All volunteers must schedule a time to help in advance and review our volunteer dress code. Volunteers must be age 13 or older (please read our youth volunteer policy).

Breakfast volunteers: 6:30am – 9:15am, every day
Lunch volunteers: 10:30am – 1:15pm, every day

We are fortunate to have volunteers lined up to prepare and serve the Thanksgiving and Christmas meals in our Dining Rooms. There are additional ways to help the hungry and homeless this holiday season, including participating in SOME’s 13th Annual Thanksgiving Day Trot for Hunger.

Parking

Limited parking is available in SOME’s lot that is adjacent to the Dining Room, as well as on the street. We have 13 parking spots labeled ‘Visitor Parking’ for volunteers. If you are not sure please ask one of our staff members.

The closest Metro station is the New York Avenue (NoMa) station on the red line. SOME is located .5 miles from the station. Head straight on N Street. At the intersection of New York Avenue and North Capitol Street, cross over North Capitol Street, then take a right onto North Capitol Street. Turn left on O Street, NW.

SOME is located .8 miles from the Mt. Vernon Square/7th Street/Convention Center station on the green line. Head east on M Street, NW. Take a slight left at New York Avenue, NW. Turn left on First Street, NW. Turn right on O Street, NW.

Provide-A-Meal (PAM) Volunteers

Provide-A-Meal volunteer groups provide meals on a regular basis in SOME’s Dining Rooms. This is a wonderful volunteer program for groups from faith communities, businesses and civic organizations to feed the hungry.

There are several different ways to provide a meal:

  • Bring in pre-made casseroles (40 to 60 casseroles in 9×12 aluminum pans will provide lunch for 400-500 people)
  • Bring ingredients and cook a full meal in SOME’s kitchen
  • Purchase food through one of SOME’s wholesalers, which SOME staff and volunteers can prepare. Approximate cost for a meal is $700-$800.

PAM volunteers are not required to stay and serve the meal they provide, but they are more than welcome to do so. We help with menu suggestions, food quantities and a list of wholesale food distributors. There is also the option to share a day with another group or to provide part of a meal.

If your group would like to provide a meal, or if you have any questions, please contact Dining Room Services at volunteer@some.org or call 202.797.8806, ext. 2109 and ask for the SOME Volunteer Coordinator. We are in need of Provide-A-Meal volunteers on the following days.
