Recent Happenings at SOME – January 2018

SOME runs 38 programs and there is always a lot going on! Here are some recent events in our programs from January.

STEAM Programs with Little PHOENIXES

A favorite enrichment activity at SOME Place for Kids, our after-school program for children living in our affordable housing, is a STEAM Power class taught by the Little PHOENIXES Foundation. The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) team creates customized lesson plans and hands-on experiments for our children. The program is held in the community rooms at the affordable housing where the children live.

Recently, the STEAM Power Team taught a class on architecture and had the kids create their own skyscrapers! Previous classes have concentrated on shapes, simple machines, airplanes and aerodynamics.

Nutrition Education with Healthy Living, Inc.

Healthy Living, Inc. provides nutrition education and healthy cooking outreach programs. These programs vary from hands-on and demo-style activities to customized program based on the audience or specific goals of the participants and/or partner organization. Our partnership with Chef Juliette and Healthy Living, Inc. provides Isaiah House members with classes that focus on health and nutrition, healthy eating practices, basic cooking skills and creative recipes.

Recently, participants at Isaiah House, SOME’s therapeutic day program for those experience homelessness and severe and persistent mental illness, learned how to make Sweet and Sour Cabbage as part of a lesson on using fruit as a substitute for sugar in recipes. Chef Juliette also led a conversation about diabetes and how to combat that disease with diet.
