Recent Happenings at SOME – August

SOME runs 38 programs and there is always a lot going on! Here are some recent events in our programs from August.

Poetry Slam

Isaiah House, a therapeutic day program for men and women who have been impacted by both homelessness and severe and persistent mental illness, provides a variety of programming throughout the day and in August put on their 1st Annual Poetry Slam. SOME staff were invited to the event and we were inspired and delighted by the performances of spoken word, poems, songs and other performance art pieces. Before the Poetry Slam, members of Isaiah House spent time learning about different forms of poetry and about the art of performing spoken word. The artists expressed that they were inspired by the opportunity to have their voice heard while being able to express their creativity and are already looking forward to next year’s event!

PAM Groups Focus on Health

SOME’s Health and Wellness Initiative is an important part all SOME programs. In our Dining Room we work with our volunteers and Provide-A-Meal groups to provide healthy meals and groceries for all our guests. Recently, the Westmoreland PAM Group shared with us the new healthy casserole recipe they created. We are so happy to have them partner with us and our guests have really enjoyed the Chicken Alfredo Casserole. From exercise classes for senior citizens and donations of fresh produce to our annual health fairs and partnerships with Cooking Matters, we are always looking for way to help people break down the barriers there are to making healthy choices. If you are interested in supporting our initiative with donations of healthy grocery items please click here or consider donating from our Amazon Wishlist.

Alumni Picnic

Alumni of SOME’s Addiction Treatment Program joined Fr. John Adams, President, and Richard Gerlach, Executive Director, friends, family, staff and current residents of the program this past August for SOME’s Annual Alumni Picnic. The picnic is wonderful way to connect with the counselors and staff that played an important role in their road to recovery and with other alumni who have taken the same journey. Everyone had an awesome time playing games, eating good food, and being entertained by our very talented Alumni in the Talent Show.

Sweat Equity Day at Rev. G. Smith House

An important part of the affordable housing process at SOME is our sweat equity day. A sweat equity day is a chance to make a contribution to a project in the form of effort and toil. When we were almost complete with the construction of the Rev. G. Smith House apartment building, we invited SOME staff and the Carlyle Group to help us finish off the project. Teams helped build lamps, install TV screens, clean units, move furniture and landscape. The Carlyle Group and SOME staff worked hard to ensure each unit was ready for a future resident to enjoy. Thank you to our friends at the Carlyle Group for joining us on our sweat equity day.
