Graduation, Employment and Success at SOME’s Center for Employment Training

Graduation season is a time to applaud all the hard work a student has accomplished. For students at SOME’s Center for Employment Training (SOME CET), graduation is the pathway for securing a living wage job.

Sixty students recently graduated from SOME CET and 90% of those graduates have already secured employment. 2014 SOME CET alumni are also thriving in their jobs – many have already received promotions and commendations.

When LaShawn graduated in 2014, she was offered several career opportunities and was shocked at how much her life had changed in just six months.

LaShawn is goal-oriented, but when life took an unexpected turn, she found herself caring for her ill son and unemployed. LaShawn felt stuck. She knew she wanted a career and to go back to school, but with her son’s health as her number one priority, she wasn’t sure how to pursue her goals.

One day, LaShawn saw a post about SOME’s Center for Employment Training Program (SOME CET). The medical administrative assistant program immediately caught LaShawn’s eye. She saw it as an opportunity to grow professionally, but also to learn more about her son’s medical condition.

LaShawn immersed herself in the SOME CET program. She learned medical terminology and a variety of other skills, but the soft skills that she gained were her biggest takeaways. The support she received from the staff really helped her to grow as a person and realize that it’s OK to make mistakes. She was able to complete the program in four months (two months early) and came back to help teach other students.

LaShawn graduated from SOME CET in 2014 and was hired as the Dental Secretary at SOME. Her son’s health is more stable and she plans to go back to school, earn her bachelor’s degree, and pursue a career as a Medical Abstractor. Working as SOME’s Dental Secretary, LaShawn has found joy in showing patients that you can reach out for help and make a better life for yourself and your family.
