"My name is Jackie L. Chandler, and I've been with SOME six marvelous years. And how I got connected with SOME is that I used to do day work, and, you know, you do day work and you get paid. And one day I was coming in from work after doing a day job, and it was a young man by the name of Seth, he told me when I was coming in, he said: 'There's an opening at SOME, why don't you check it out?'
And I went there and they hired me the same day. That's where I used to work at, that was my first job at SOME, at Thea Bowman [House]. I mopped floors, I emptied the trash. If some of the tenants needed their rooms to be cleaned, such as stoves to be cleaned, I cleaned that. I changed locks, and that basically was my job at Thea Bowman [House]. It was nice, I enjoyed it. Before I came to SOME, I used to, well, I have a mental illness, paranoid-schizophrenia, and I was on the downside rather, because I wasn't taking medication as prescribed, you know, so I found myself in a whole lot of difficult situations, I'll put it that way.
What happened, like no man's an island, you know, and I got associated with a group of good people, and they sort of set me on a straight and narrow path. I take my medication like clockwork, because I think that's important in my success at SOME and my success in life."
