With the holiday season fast approaching, the thoughts of many turn towards helping the less fortunate. SOME relies on the generosity of Washingtonians to ensure that winter will be safe, healthy and festive for the one in five DC residents that live below the poverty line.
SOME offers a variety of ways to give back this holiday season:
Washingtonians are invited to join SOME on Thanksgiving Day for a 5k run/walk on Pennsylvania Avenue. The District’s only Turkey Trot, the Trot for Hunger raises over $600,000 that allows SOME to continue to provide critical services such as food, clothing and healthcare to hundreds of thousands of men, women and children. Register at http://some.org/trot; prices are set to increase by $5 on Nov. 14.
SOME relies on food donations to serve more than 400,000 meals to hungry men, women and children each year. Organizing a food drive in an office, school, faith community or other location is a wonderful way to help people in need on special holidays and throughout the year.
For those interested in directly helping a struggling individual or family enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday, SOME will accept Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets on Nov. 18, 19 and 21. Details on Thanksgiving Dinner baskets.
Through December 8, SOME will collect shoeboxes decorated for the holidays and brimming with essential items and gifts for homeless or poor children, women and men. Gift boxes will be given out or delivered over the holidays to all who come to SOME for meals and services and to those who are residents in SOME’s housing. Shoebox Gift How-To.
Holiday shoppers can support the poor and homeless in DC by selecting SOME as their AmazonSmile beneficiary organization at http://smile.amazon.com.
Shoppers looking to give back can also visit our Amazon Wish List to purchase our most urgently needed items and have them shipped directly to SOME.
Gifts to SOME will help provide food, clothing, medical care, job training, affordable housing and more to the homeless and poor in our community. SOME is ranked by Charity Navigator as a Four Star Charity. Ninety-two percent of a donation to SOME goes directly to people in need. Those interested can donate at http://some.org/give.
Volunteers play an essential role in SOME’s work, helping to feed the homeless and poor in our Dining Rooms, tutoring children in our affordable housing programs for families, serving vulnerable elderly and more. Learn about volunteer opportunities.
Thanksgiving is an incredibly popular time to volunteer in our dining room. However, we are in need of breakfast and lunch volunteers every single day of the year. Sign up to serve in our dining room.
